QUILTIE SWAP

Here is a pic of the quiltie I sent to Di over in England. It was for a quiltie swap I took part in. I crazy-patched the block and mostly free-embroidered the Aussie wildflowers using DMC threads,silk ribbon and some of my hand-dyed rayon thread which is very similar to an Edmar thread. I think the waratah flower turned out the best, being bullion wraps over a felt centre. The hardest to depict, I found was the kangaroo paw, which turned out a little bulky, but I guess it's still recognisable (AT least I hope it is)LOL

in order to keep an account of those blocks that survived the travel horrors of the 2006CQRR.

Pinup's Blocks

Block 1 Block 2
These are the two of three blocks I have remaining from the CQOO06 RR. They are to start the last leg of their journey - home - to New Zealand today. My contribution is the bead work in the last section of the bottom Block2.
Pinup's blocks are so full of life and colour and she has used some interesting fabrics in the makeup of her blocks... When I first received them (quite some months ago now!!) I was bedazzled by the vibrancy of them - the first words I thought of when I looked at them were carnival and fireworks... I must admit it took me a while to 'find my place' amongst the colours to stitch - the section of brown gold embroidered satin caught my eye and stirred my imagination and the tone on tone beads which I found I had a long with the little floral shapes were 'just made' for the job... I wanted to cluster the beads - stitching them on top of each other to create some height - I found I had some gold balls so I added them to 'connect' to the gold embroidery of the fabric and some of the other aspects of the block. That small section took a few mornings work and created some interest from passersby in the food court where I sit and stitch before I start work each morning.
E - I hope you like my 'little bit'. Your blocks will be home soon...

I finally made it in... Since changing to the new blogger I have lost my old dashboard and do you think I could remember the user name to retrieve it!!!!! I am sure when I get to heaven (????) and the BIG G asks me for my user name or password I will be sitting outside the pearly gates for eternity trying to remember it - note to self here - take some stitching!!!! Anyway the reason I was so desperate to get here was that my blocks have completed their pilgrimage and are now home. In May,2006 my two naked blocks set off to travel to the USA,then to Jacqui in the UK;back to Australia,across to Jo and Evie in NZ then finally via Margaret in Hervey Bay they arrived home this week.

In all,ten people added their work to these two blocks:

Becky,Jacqui,Helen,Sharon,Hope,Lynette, Roslyn, Jo,Evie and Margaret.

Thank you ladies for the little bits of your self you have given to me.

I'm only sorry that not everyone's blocks survived the international travel.

An email from Becky this morning let me know that somehow her block managed to sneak past the postal gremlins and arrive back in California.
Some good news at last !

Now if St Anthony (patron saint of lost property) would just weave a little more magic,and find the other missing blocks,
all would be "sweet".

I'm hoping that over the Summer(northern hemisphere) Becky and the other members who have their completed blocks will publish their completed articles.

Maureens block

Here is my work on Maureens block. Her blocks are almost packed full at this point. Maureen I worked the the patch around the fan edge. The block will be off to Pinup tomorrow hopefully. There is some beautiful stitching on this block.

I must apologise for having taken so long to do so little on Becky's block.......

Over the latter part of Summer I had completely lost the itch to stitch due to a few changes in our life.
Anyway Becky,come Tuesday your block will commence its journey home.
(It's a public holiday here on Monday so no Post Office are open)

Anyway I added a button and bead cluster with two pieces of dyed shell to hang below the bottom edge of your proposed bag.

I know I've been bad....placing such bulk so close to seams,but I'm hoping your manipulate your stutching around them

Returning to Jacqui

These blocks left today to return to Jacqui in the UK.
So many blocks went MIA in the postal system mainly between Quuensland and California,that Jacqui requested these be sent to her direct.

I can only hope that St Christopher,patron saint of travellers sees fit to let these arrive safely at their destination!

I've been involved in international swaps now for nearly seven years and until this current round have never had so much mail go astray.
What makes it even more sickening, was the fact that most of the blocks had had a fair amount of work/handwork done on them.

I think the second of these blocks with the cat as central feature is my favourite........did I ever say how much I love cats!
LynB worked the cat,and I DO like the way it is framed by bead and button trails etc.
Pinup added her trademark.......the face painted in Jacquard Lumiere.
Me? I cheated and added some tatting and beads.
On the other block I used some Edmar Lolla & Iris threads and added a couple of Japanese violets with MoP chips as accent 'leaves'.

One thing I did need to frogstitch,was a pretty piece of white braid.........well,I thought it was WHITE but once in position it looked PINK!
So it had to go..........(amazing how some whites are not actually white)
Even looking at those Edmar threads.....both labelled OOO( for white) look cream to me.

Trapped!

In the littoral zone! Whilst waiting for
inspiration" to strike with a view to working on Jacqui's White in White CQRR,I felt the need to play.
One of the groups I'm involved with,had the theme "trapped";

Only trouble was,it was the machine-needle-felting and after a couple of months of my Xpressions being moth-balled I've nearly forgotten how to use it!

So this piece is a no-brainer to get me back into making journal quilts again.

Rainbow paper was used to colour the silk Noil fabric and then shells, and yarns representing seaweed were trapped behind some black bridal tulle.
A piece of driftwood left by previous house owner was draped with faux -fur yarn and added at the base.

My idea was to represent the sealife trapped by a falling tide.
(reminder to self......an odd thong (flip-flop sandal) needs to be added)

Look away right now! These are Jacqui's two white on white blocks...............as they reached me earlier this week!
So far..........(I "think") all but Becky and myself have worked on them.

It's a difficult choice...........the blocks are "white on white" fabrics;

and to present a vibrant block with NO contrasting colours..............various textures have been employed,with stitches,thread ,buttons and beads.

Let's hope that Jacqui is happy with the results!

I went to the Woody Point PO to pick up Margaret's parcel containing Jacqui's scrumptious WOW blocks----

Came home,
decided to press the blocks and photograph them for the blog----
Got side-tracked into unpacking more cartons(so I had room for the ironing board!)

Hello All,

Over the last few weeks I have been working on a huge project (well maybe not quite that big, but big enough) I decided to do a crazy patch Garden Journal Cover, for the "Garden Swap". My partner will receive the finished article in a couple of days time so I thought now would be a good time to put a few pics up of the project.

So I must apologise to Maureen (for being slack and not getting your blocks done on time) as your blocks arrived just after I had started. I have made a start on your fan block and will post them off soon, I think I have to post to Lynette B.

BUT here are a couple of pics. I have only embellished the front, and am pleased enough with the result to plan on doing 2 more Journals.

Dreamer - here is your block... I did the far right hand side.... I am sending it off on Wednesday to Hope... I have used a combination of white lace, and a beautiful variegated silk thread which was just divine to work with... I hope you like it and that the colours are subdued enough for you... I know the butterfly is a little on the bright side but he felt 'just right' there... Now onto pinups...

This is the first time just one block has arrived, it seems most of us have launched two into the rr circle. As it gets fuller it is quite a challenge to fit something in and still leave room for others (I think that is an inportant consideration).

Helen's blocks left Queensland today to visit Evie in New Zealand.
With my impending move,I thought it safer to send the blocks to someone else rather than risk misplacing them in the chaos reigning here.

When Evie has finished her bout of stitching,she'll forward them to Becky in California.......
hopefully these will survive the mail and not go AWOL.

I wonder if Becky has had any updates on the saga of the missing blocks??

That these TWO beauties belonging to Helen arrived today.!

It seems ages since I had any blocks,when in reality it was only mid December I posted Sharon's to Becky, and I guess/hope that Becky must be close to forwarding to Jacqui.

Back to Helen's blocks:
There are two blocks for Helen,and I'll be the eighth person to work on them.

The first block,Helen is planning on incorporating into a wall hanging and she prefers natural fibres and items in shades ranging through creams/beige/browns.
Hope's picot woven Flannel flower,and Roz' seam treatment with curving ribbons and embroidered flowers are well worth a close look!

The second block has an " under the sea" theme,and Sharon's seahorse is really a delight,below which is the seaweed (Margaret's?) with the shells and beads........Margaret's comment was that she made this with Solvy.Knowing what a whizz she is with the machine techniques,I'm presuming I read the logbook correctly in assuming it's her work.
Heaven knows what I'll add.......will need to think on it a while.

The rectangular block is the entire block;the larger square pic is a close-up of the stitching that Jo added.

Earth to Sea/Water

With Sharon declaring this block to be "Earth to Sea/water,
I was a little worried that previous members had neglected the "earth" aspect,and have been wondering how to balance this defect.
In the end I opted for a Mangrove bush/tree as it has its roots in both worlds!
The tree trunk and branches were worked in chain and stem stitch with Marlitt rayon thread with silk ribbon for leaves.A few small shells were added .......sorry I didnt have any small enough oyster shells for the trunk.

This is the block that Sharon said she would like to see embellished to "within an inch of its life"!
Not normally colours I choose to work with,the shades of red in two patches reminded me of a good red wine,so using Edmar rayon threads in Lola and Frost weights I attempted to add a bunch of (red)grapes.
I still can't decide whether it needs more.........

These two blocks owned by Sharon arrived from Margaret late last week;
The pink/yellow block to use Sharon's words "...would look good embellished to within an inch of its life......"
and she'll decide what it will be in its next life,when it finally returns home.
(Sharon,it's "getting there"!)

The blue/green block Sharon has christened 'Earth to Sea/Water' and she is planning for it to end up as a piece of fibre art or a snazzy small bag-a continual art piece.

Late last month,everything fell in a heap,when it was discovered that three sets of blocks I'd mailed on in separate postings to Becky had not arrived:

These included blocks for Jo in NZ;
Hope in Queensland,
and Lynette in Victoria.
The weird thing was that Roz ' blocks(which slot in between Lyn and Jo in the round robin)
slipped through okay and should now be about due back with Helen in Australia.

Investigations at my end reveal that unless I pay for Registered mail as well as First class Airmail there is no way the postal system can track the mail in question.....and then it's only a case of getting "someone" to sign that they have received it.

This is the first time in over six years of regularly posting International mail that I've had any go missing............I'm wondering if I should reduce the amount of information I include on the Customs Declaration for starters................
apart from withdrawing from international swaps,has anyone any suggestions ?

Here is your fan block Maureen... I have done the section with the butterflies... As time is of the essence I will be sending (finally!!!!) off tomorrow to Hope... I have decided not to add to the second block as I know it still has a way to go before it heads home... I think that this block will look spectacular when completed and working on it has whetted my appetite to make one for myself (next year!!!!)... Now onto dreamers block...

I am doing this manually to sidestep the flickr software which wont work! So fingers crossed everyone!

I do hope this is finally going to work. Flickr is playing me up!

Here is Roz's beautiful flower garden. I added the central panel in the photo. There are some lace motifs which I have been saving for a project with just these colours so it only seemed right to use them here. Flower gardens also attract butterflies so 3 have made it to this quiet corner of floral heaven. Then I also added a seam treatment of lazy daisy and french knots which doesn't show very well in the photo but works nicely IRL.

Roz's block is finally on it's way so hopefully things are moving again.

i wholeheartedly appologise to everyone for stalling on this for so long and I renew my committment to pass on any future blocks I recieve in 2 weeks. I will do my utmost to improve my times on this cq ladies and I am sorry for holding things up for so long. *blushes*

Becky's Block

Here is Becky's Block. I have stitched a birdbath in bullion stitch with a couple of blackbirds dropping in for a drink. On the seam I used feather stitch in a Colour Streams silk "Venetian Sunset", wonderful yellows, oranges, reds and purples, and crawling across the stitching is an orange ladybeetle bead. Just perfect for this block!!! Hope you like what I have done Becky!

Joma's Block

I have only worked on one of Joma's blocks, the rectangular block.
On this block I chose to do a branch of wistaria. Worked in French knots with variegated mauve thread for the flowers , Edmar glory for the leaves using detached chainstitch for the leaves and stem stitch for the leaf bracts and and chain stitch to create the branch using DMC cotton. I also worked on one seam doing a leafy trail and two bright yellow flowers with red centres. This is shaping up to be a real flowery treat.

Here is the work done on one of Jammies blocks. I actually really enjoyed doing the white on white. Didn't have to angst about colour choice at all!!
I added the fargo rose and pearl trail that curves around the cat. I also did the buttonhole (with detatched buttonhole) down the seam under the button cluster.

More dragonflies... I have finally completed my part of Becky's block... I have stitched and unpulled more times than I care to admit to - no matter what I did nothing seemed to work. I had stitched the multicolored wave of blanket stitch first then I added the french knots to add some interest and texture. I had found the gold charm at a lovely embroidery shop and the matching beads were in my collection but for some reason I couldn't move passed that point and I tried quite a few things which just 'didn't fit' and then on Saturday I wandered into a scrapbooking store and there they were... As I looked at these little dragonfly paperclips Becky's block came to mind... Bingo!!!! Here was my answer... Becky I hope you like this addition to your block... Tomorrow it will be winging its way to Hope on the next leg of its Australian tour...

I took the liberty of tweaking the editing of Jacqui's pic of pinup's 'other' block and lightened it a little.(Hope you don't mind J!!)
I LOVE the dragonfly button!
I'll also try (sometime in next day or so) to upload pics in sequence,so we can see how the blocks are progressing.

Just a warning though..........don't hold your collective breath as things are a bit chaotic "here" at home base.
I'm running around like a chook with it's head cut off!

(Translation for non-Aussies: substitute 'hen' or 'chicken' for 'chook' :-)

Now this is a big cheat because it isn't 'sewing' as such but when I went to Pavi Yarns the other week they had these lovely checoslovakian (err not sure if they're chec or slovac?) glass buttons. I have been on the look out for something for Pinup's second block and these seem the perfect thing. So now there are dragonflies on both blocks Pinup :o) Both blocks are filling up nicely and the parcel, well padded , enought to protect the glass I hope, is ready for me to take to the post office in the morning. So look out Helen get your sunglasses out, they're bright. Not like that gloomy photgraph at all, but that's what you get when you try to photograph things at 11pm! *rolls eyes* Next up is Rozhearts block.

Hope's fairy garden

Sometimes even fairies get tired of playing only with flowers,and like a bead and button trail for a change!

Using doll buttons and seed as well as delica beads(to keep to the small scale required )I added the bead and button trail just above the spider's web.

There's still room for someone else to grow a vine or something similar,above and around the trail .

Time now to update the Logbook for Hope and leave the parcel with the postal pixies to get it to BeckY

ATC with Japanese/haiku theme

These days I seem to be spending more time on KenmaursCorner than blogging on CQCrazy.

So,although this isn't strictly CQ I thought that as I'd acquired the Obi fabric for use in CQ might excuse me!

The ATC swap was themed" Japanese and Haiku":
The brief was to choose a haiku and then construct an ATC (Artist Trading Card) to illustrate the theme of the haiku.
We could either compose our own haiku or choose one of the masters.
I chose finally to use this:

A folded fan of Autumn
Is inserted
In the obi hard like a fan.
Now I'd bought this,and a larger fan at last October's Stitches & Craft Show in Brisbane,and I felt that this haiku by Hisajo Sugita and the Obi fabric were perfect for the display of the smaller fan.

On the reverse of the fan I've made a tulle pocket to hold the haiku card.
This is one ATC I won't be trading---It's also my first.

The other four were mailed to NZ today.

Fairy Floss

Hope's "Fairy Floss" block arrived here today,and is an absolute delight with hollyhocks,and roses and iris blooming in the garden to keep the resident fairy content.

It's going to be difficult to keep up with you lot on this one,so I'll need to go and put the thinking cap on!
I guess I'll be thinking "Spring" as that is our current season down here.

I'm in a bit of a lull at the moment ,when it comes to Crazy quilting:

Postcards completed for a "carnival" swap.

I have committments to (behind schedule) art journal quilts,but I did use the carnival theme for one quilt.
I need to make more craftie "thingies" for grand-daughter's school fete;

Mary's Block

Finally I have finished Mary's (Joma's daughter) block... I had so little to do on it and just couldn't get to it... I hope you like it Mary... I combined painting, stitching and beading for Mary's block - each of the butterflies were handpainted as was the background behind the grasses... I wanted to give my piece a sense of movement both with the butterflies and the music notes... Perhaps my overall theme is that nothing stays the same - Life is always moving...

You may remember from a posting last week,that LynB has two rectangular blocks in this current RR.
The upper pic shows a "Strawberry garland" covering two seams.This was done using silk ribbons I dyed myself, a strand of Edmar "Glory" for the light foliage,and a few seed beads for sparkle.

The lower pic is a gold heart charm that I've filled with Colonial knots of silk ribbon and again a bit of foliage down in Edmar Frost thread.

Once I update Lyn's logbook,the parcel will be off the Becky in California.

I thought today,I'd pose a question and see what sort (if any) response I get!

How do you CQ?

Do you use predominantly :
a) cotton fabrics
b) "after five" type fabrics
c) a mixture of both

And as for style:
Do you rely on your choice of fabrics for WOW factor,
or are seam treatments, embellishments and/or encrusting your 'thing'?

Do you prefer to stitch your embellishments with machine embroidery,or handwork?

I'm asking,because I know how my 'style' has evolved over the years,and I'm wondering how much yours has changed.
I don't mean an improvement in stitching/embroidery,but whether your overall approach to the type of CQ has changed as you've become more involved with the obsession.

Please leave a comment....I'd love to read your thoughts on the matter

Here's the photo of what I added to the first block, a bead trail and 3 shisha mirrors. The clours in the block are so bright that shisha seemed the perfect thing. These blocks are getting really full now so it's a challenge to find a space. Still need to look at the secod block - hopefully this evening and then these will be off to Helen.

I was very excited today to learn via GinaH of Quilter's Buzz that my Blog had been featured in the second issue of Quilters Home magazine edited by Mark Lipinski of PickleRoadStudio.

Back in May I was asked to submit a profile and heard nothing until today's email.
As yet I'm waiting/hoping that Gina will email me a copy of the article to see what was said,because so far I have been unable to get a hard copy in my hot little hands.

Lyn's request was that both "are to do with gardens please"
So far Roslyn (Rozhearts),Jo,Evie (pinup),Dianne (joma) and Margaret (dreamer) have worked on them,and there is certainly a Spring garden air about both blocks.
This will be two gardens that won't be drought affected

Mountmellick style for Jammies white on white

Jam-mam, just thought I'd give you a little detail about what I have just finished on your White on White. Firstly I have forgotten to take a pic :(I had decided to do some Mountmellick work, which was done in Ireland with white threads on white cloth. (I think my grandmother had something similar in her household linens, but I think hers was probably from a German embroidery tradition)AS the subject I chose a shamrock (or clover) a leaf and flower , the leaf I worked in buttonhole and the flower in bullion stitch, with stem stitch for the stalks, I used perle cotton in 8 and 12 for the embroidery as that is similar to the original threads first used for Mountmellick work. On the seam I tried out the Mountmellick stitch, which turns out similar to a buttonhole with a twist. I only worked on one of the blocks. I hope you like what I did, I try to attempt a new stitch each block I work on, to add to my repertoire.

On block one, I embroidered some wisteria using Edmar variegated Lola and 6-10 wrap bullions for the flowers. The stems were woven chain and the leaves lazy-daisies using DMC thread. Then using SRE and ribbon stitch, I stitched some climbing briar roses ( adapted from a design of Helen Dafter's)
On the second block, I attached a small beaded butterfly motif.

I stitched a Jacobean-style pomegranate on the fan block and finished the curved seam with zig-zagged lazy-daisy stitches interlaced with gold thread.
On the other block, I embroidered some Autumn leaves, attached a small patch of batik-style fabric that had an 'M' as part of the pattern, added a button and bead trail and a tiny crystal flutterby above Becky's flowers.

Here are some piccies of how Helens blocks are looking . I hadn't worked on Helens seahorse block, but as I was putting it in the envelope to post, I was inspired, so thats what I've been doing this afternoon. I added some fly stitch seaweed in gold thread (looks like feather stitch, but it's not!) and the stone chips down the bottom left. In amongst the rocks is nestled some coral done in 'drizzle stitch'. This is a lovely looking block. Sharons seahorse is beautiful and sets the tone for the whole block.
All the blocks I have are packed up and ready to go off to pinup.

Slippery little suckers

While I was still drafting a reply,Viv Garforth over on CQfriends came up with a fairly concise explanation:

Anyway, back to Rajmahal.
First thing, never just open the skein and try to
pull out a thread or you will end up with a humungous knot.
Always wrap the
thread around either a floss card or a plastic "bow" first. I usually
stretch the skein over the knobs of two chairs place exactly the right
distance apart and they become like my Dad's hands when Mum used to use Dad
to wind a skein of wool into balls in the 1950s. Then, unwrap the length of
thread that you require and only cut off one or two threads from the 6
thread skein and re-wrap the others back around the holder.
I use my threads about 15 - 16 inches long.
I have never run them through beeswax,
that's predominantly for metal goldwork threads I think -
but if the rayon is too springy you can dampen it and then iron it before using it.
Personally, I got used to using it just as it came and a couple of years ago
Louise changed the actual thead which is now much silkier than the old stuff
and is much more user friendly.

It is beautiful when worked with just a single thread.
When using two threads, one thread sometimes works itself
shorter than the other and you have to keep pulling it separately through
the eye of the needle to match the longer one.
I have never used three or more threads as I like the 'needle-painting' effect you get by using just one or two. Satin Stitch looks gorgeous when worked over a few rows of stem
stitch padding and the Rajmahal art silk thread has a beautiful sheen.

Anyway, I love using it but I agree that a lot of people give up first
go.......I wholeheartedly agree that it is well
worth persevering with and practicing with because once you get used to it,
it is hard to go back to ordinary stranded cotton.

I should just mention that the chart for this came from Pam Kellog who has been posting 100 charts in 100 days as part of the series sparked by an idea from Sharon Boggon. Thanks to Belle who pointed me in the direction of these blackwork charts. I thought this one was just the 'thing' I needed.

Now I have a pause while I wait for the next blocks to arrive :o) and once again I promise myself I will get started quicker next time so i don't end up rushing (sigh!)

Dreamer's cq

hi all :)

I have finished my work on dreamer's cq. I added a large blackwork butterfly but don't worry it isn't black! Dreamer's block is so femine and delicate I decided that black would be too overpowering so I used my new rajmahal silk in pink and purple - i am pleased with how it turned out but can't find the digi camera (kids!) and the scanner is bust due to having eaten a wax crayon (kids!) so I am delaying posting until after the afore mentioned kids return from school as I really want a piccie before I post this off.

just wanted to let you know I am still here as I have been a bit quiet lately - most unlike me! :o)

I would welcome some advice on working with rajmahal Maureen, also how do you store them and get them off the skein successfully? They are so lovely but a tad slippery ;o)

So, I have had a play with Jo's rectangular block:
First I stitched a cretan stitch with two strands of purple Rayon thread;then I laced an orange silk ribbon through the stitches and added purple seed beads to tips of cretan stitches.
I used a silver and pearl Shisha as a flower and back stitched stems with shell as leaves.

I also added a fine braid around the top of the fan and anchored it with purple seed beads in the centre of the braid.

Another two blocks ready to head off top Becky!

Jo must have been trying to stir me with the query about using her dressmaking scissors for cutting up CDs for Shishas!

Talk about sacrilege!

Go wash your mouth out ,girl!

What you do,is con your half handy-man into attacking old CDs with a (cutting) die....or metal punch.
Of course you make certain he/she is wearing safety glasses first...just in case!

Then I remembered an earlier post where I said:
But one DS did a wonderfully neat job with a hole saw on CDs
Being a technical man AND a neat freak he did a marvellous job and I ended up with 12 and 19 mm discs to play with.

You can manage with old (but sharp) scissors: Mark out circles with a permanent felt pen or similar then 'hack ' your way around the markings.

This method can be a bit "hard" on your thumb knuckle,I found,
so I prefer to con my son into using his tools!

Not exactly perfect,but as you add a frame of stitches to hold the mirror in position,the rough edges don't show up in your work.

Then again,Lincraft have the mirrors with their Rajmahal products,for a fairly reasonable price these days.

OR a substitute would be to use those LARGE gold sequins.

On the seam above the silk flower garden I stitched a curved chain stitch in a violet rayon thread.Over this I used amethyst seed beads around beaded pearl centred flowers with SRE leaves and a gold flower became the focal point

Jellyfish for Hope

Hope asked how I did the Jellyfish. I picked a button first. Buttons are slightly rounded (usually), so the flatter the button the better, or one of those lovely MOP discs would be perfect, and you could pick a gorgeous colour. I used the shisha stitch to attach it, at this piont I will link to Annies Crazy World, who has just done a great tut on this. The stitch that goes around the shisha is basically just buttonhole. When I have done rounded ones before, that I felt neede a bit more security, I keep adding rows of detached buttonhole to the previous row, until I'm sure that the button/disc/whatever won't fall out.
Here is a piccie of a 'cats eye' that I did. I finished it off on the top and bottom with chain stitch. Once it's attached, you can pretty much dress it up any way you like. I didn't do anything fancy with the jelly fish, just straight buttonhole.
Right, when you've done that, I stitched the tentacles, which is just a staight stitch, with beads added for a bit of extra sparkle.
The smaller one is three bullion wraps in the centre and chain stitch around the outside.
Bet that's as clear as mud. If you need more guidance, I'll do my best.

J's block...

I have nearly completed jam_mam's block... I must admit it was harder than I thought it would be - trying to create interest visually with 'white on white' was more of a challenge that I thought it would be. I wanted to create dandelions as a symbol of both time and distance that I felt that the block represented for me... I wanted to create the feeling of movement with in the block - the dandelion, the butterfly and the seam treatment... After consulting many pictures of dandelions and in desperation going and finding growing in the garden I have come somewhere close I hope... I wanted to try convey both the structure and texture of the head of the dandelion. The butterfly was pure inspiration - made from cutting into a piece of lace and using the the pattern within its structure to create both the wings and body. I still have to tweak the block a little more but after some delays will be in the post towards the end of the week... Sorry to everyone that I have yet again fallen behind... Becky's block has arrived and I have been considering what I shall create for it...

I chose towork on two adjoining seams because there was a fabric gap where they meet..under the pearl shell bird.
It was to be a Dove of peace,but the Olive branch looked a bit scrappy,so I incorporated the spray of mallow blooms around it.

When Round Robin blocks land in my letter box,I like to photograph them before I start work on them myself.
Jo's two blocks were no exception;
I was having a camera session yesterday.....
some "sun printing" for Kenmaurs Corner
followed by Roz block,and then Jo's two blocks...the square above,and a rectangular one.

Unfortunately,as I started photographing Jo's second block a rectangle,my camera suffered a terminal disease and died!

I'll try scanning the block,but I know I wont get as good results as I do with the camera......
As I use my camera at least five of every seven days,I'm feeling withdrawal symptoms already......
so for a time the only pics you'll be getting from me will be from my archives,or via the scanner.

Just something else for you all to mull over!

I was on the phone to Australian Customs last week,in order to clarify what could have become a problem when some of our Round Robin blocks commenced the overseas leg
of their "back-packing" through Australia ,New Zealand,USA and UK before heading home back to Oz.
The block that sparked my concern had a beautiful little (wild-bird )feather on it,and knowing what treatment other swaps in other forums had experienced because of natural embellishments (i.e. straw,corn leaves,corn husks) I thought I'd better do a double check.

I've checked with Australian Customs:
It will leave Australia safely,but...
Customs in other countries will NOT be happy!
and........
it won't be allowed back into Oz with the feather in position

Of course,you could just NOT DECLARE the feather and take a risk of having the block confiscated or even mutilated.

So my advice to all and sundry:
Be law abiding!
These days,with Bird Flu viruslooming as a threat
we need to be more vigilant

If you particularly want to include a feather or something Customs may not like,why not take a photo of that embellishment in the position you fancy,and email that pic to the owner of the block (and if you're in the same country) mail it to the block's owner for her to add at her leisure.

So, please give your embellishments a little more thought..just in case!!

Hi Maureen, here are your blackberries again - slightly clearer photo as I was supposed to be photographing the seam *rolls eyes* The seam is in oranges and is double herringbone and french knots. The colours echo those already added by becky on the other side of the berries.

I also added some blackwork acorns to your other block

I chose to do the "Natural" block of Helen's. AS she is trying to get a variety of "natural" objects and threads this was a perfect chance to get some of the new DMC linen threads. I also had few of the colour range that Helen was hoping for. I used the colours of the fabrics in the block to choose the colours for the threads that I bought and then chose from those to make a small spray of Australian Natives. I embroidered a Flannel FLower in Perle cotton, used single linen for the stems and embroidery cotton for the wattle buds, embroidery cotton (Presencia Brand made in Spain) for the French knots to make a bottlebrush and Then used cup stitch to make a 3D gum blossom and embroidered a small flat one beside it also in perle and embroidery cottons.

Yesterday out in the garden I managed to find a feather to use on the seam embellishment, I stitched a feather stitch in linen (single thread) used a pinky brown to make french knots at the end of each feather and couched the pink feather down with silk embroidery thread.

I know you were hoping to use beige's to browns, so I hope this pretty rose pink to pale pinkish white does not take you too far off the original intent (I could have used a green and yellow or a blue and grey feather :D ) I think it came from a galah (my neighbour and I both conferred and came to this decision)

It's time to call a halt.......and leave room for someone else!
On both of Pinup's blocks I've tried to stay with the same theme(can you guess it?)
Three Art doll molds in air drying clay have been painted with Jacquard Lumiere paints,as has the small 'flower' of Tyvek film at the upper right hand of the pink faces;
Sari silk embroidery thread was employed for the hair-do and small beads completed the coiffure.
On the second block I've swirled a spray of SRE flowers, beads and another face across two patches.
I tried to follow Evie's suggestion of swirling across the patches and if anyone else wants to add to my spray........go for it!
I'll be mailing on to Becky ASAP.

Becky's Block

Becky's block is now on it's way to Sharon, at last. I finished stitching it this morning. As the section I embellished reminded me a little of tree bark, I decided to embroider some Aussie wildflowers on it. I began by sketching out a rough design on some paper. Once the placement looked okay to me, I threaded up my needle and started stitching, using what I call my 'freehand' embroidery. This almost always involves a little of what Maureen has coined 'frog stitching'(Rippit, rippit, rippit)LOL - as I don't transfer the design first.
There are some gumnuts and blossoms (eucalytus), bottlebrush (callistemon) and some wattle (acacia). FinallyI added some of our tiny stingless native bees. I stitched all of this with DMC stranded threads using straight stitches, french knots and lazy daisy stitch.
I thought I'd better not do any seam treatments as I had already taken up quite a large space.

After an overnight pause and then viewing the block via the scanned image I decided that it needed some 'tweaking'... Firstly, I felt that the first wing 'disappeared' when compared to the second larger wing and because of the stitching lines the stitched wing made the crown also disappear - the eye followed all the lines and saw them all as the same if you can follow my drift... So to remedy both 'problems' I created another tulle wing-only smaller- the same as the larger one... I then double threaded the crown to give it more definenition... I also added some french knots in the variegated thread on the stomach to give eye interest and a 'challenge' ... I felt that the area behind the seahorse was a little empty and that the bubbles were just 'floating' without 'an anchor'... I added a single thread feather stitch seaweed trail to bring that portion of the block together... I am still unsure whether to add another starfish to the top of the block so that the eye is 'caught' on the colour and 'observes' and moves around the block rather than just gliding down the seaweed to the seahorse...

I made the choice not to add a seam treatment as I didn't want to separate the seahorse section from the rest of the block... I felt that if any of the other stitchers involved wanted to continue on with the scene then it would give some sort of continuation... Perhaps even roaming over the seam line would keep it all together - but of course it is up to each individual to make their own choices and stitch their bits... I only hope that the rest of the stitchers have as much fun as I have had... :-))) And of course I hope Helen likes it!!!!!!

Helen - here is your underwater block... I hope you like its new resident... I had lots of fun doing this and I would like to explore this theme on a big piece featuring this little fellow... I guess this is not quite crazy quilting more like textile art so I do hope that you are happy with it and like my interpretation of your theme... It decided that it would span two parts of the block - just moved right on in so to speak... LOL the fabric I made the seahorse out of was material I bought to make a shirt with about 20 years ago - I am so glad that I finally found a use for it...

I thought I would follow Jo's lead and post a general comment. I have just spent a very enjoyable time catching up on all the work going on in the rr. Things are looking lovely, i really like how my block is turning out so far and seeing everyone elses is great too LOL very inspiring. Still waiting for my second block to arrive so don't worry if it's taking a while to hear from me. I thought I had better ask if anyone doesn't want blackwork please do tell me, i wont be offended. I am not planning to do it on all the blocks, by the way, just in case you were worried ROFLM.

Lynettes block

Here is the work I have done on lynettes block, the grass is cast on stitch-long ones, and the flowers are also cast on stitch- round ones. the only difference is where you bring you needle out of the fabric, close to where it went in (circles) or further away (lines) There is a small yellow french knot for some zing in the centre of the flowers. Lynette requested a garden theme for her blocks. I had much grander plans...but it's not my block and I was worried I would muck it up.
Still not sure if the stems need leaves??

Joma's second block

......is rectangular in shape,and on this I've also used a back stitched 'vine' to which have been added some Japanese Violets.These were worked using Edmar Iris threads and bullion wraps varying in number between 37 and 45.
Originally I had stitched some other flowers here,but they looked a bit blah!(I mentioned I'd be doing some frog-stitch...On comparison with the pic of a week I think the added dimension of the bullions give more oomph to the block.I hope Joma is satisfied with the outcome.
Oh! the buds are acrylic beads for yet more texture.
